Health Literacy is the capacity of an individual to obtain, interpret and understand basic health information and services and the competence to use such information and services in ways that are health enhancing.

Attributes of a health literate person:
· Critical thinker and problem solver
· A responsible, productive citizen
· A self-directed learner
· An effective communicator

The Health Literacy Portfolio (HLP) enables students to demonstrate that they have met the requirements of the State of Maine Learning Results, as well as the development of health literacy. The HLP also provides a method of assessing the District's Mission Statement through a process of self-evaluation and reflection.
